Explanation of the Classes
The following is a brief explanation of what each class we run at Oswego is. We may run more classes than
are covered here, but we will try to keep this as up-to-date as possible.
| Junior Purple |
Briggs Junior Sportsman I (WKA) Junior Sportsman |
|
| 8-12 | 245lbs. | Briggs | Purple Plate |
| This class runs a stock Briggs motor with a purple-colored restrictor plate of standard size in the carb.
If you hear the name "Junior Sportsman" alone it probably means this class, and not Junior Blue.
The purple restrictor plate is the smallest that is placed on Briggs engines, making it the slowest class
we run at Oswego. For this reason the purple class is recommended for youngsters new to karting. |
| Junior Blue |
Briggs Junior Sportsman II (WKA) Junior Sportsman Blue |
|
| 8-12 | 300lbs. | Briggs | Blue Plate |
| This class runs a stock Briggs motor with a blue-colored restrictor plate of standard size in the carb.
The blue restrictor plate is slightly larger than the purple plate, making this class a good choice for more experienced junior
karters who want to experience higher speeds, but are still in the lowest age bracket. |
| Junior Gold |
Briggs Restricted Junior (WKA) Junior Restricted |
|
| 12-15 | 300lbs. | Briggs | Gold Plate |
| Junior Restricted runs the gold-colored restrictor plate.
The gold plate is the largest restrictor plate placed on Briggs motors, allowing
our older junior karters to have a little more power to play around with. |
| Junior Unrestricted |
| Briggs Junior (WKA) |
|
| 12-15 | 300lbs. | Briggs | Stock |
| Junior Unrestricted runs no form of restriction, which combined with the light weight of the driver usually results in speeds similar
to or greater than that of the senior Briggs classes. Recommended only for experienced junior karters expecting to transition
to a senior Briggs class. |
| Junior Yamaha |
Junior 2-Cycle Junior 3-Hole Can |
|
| 12-15 | 300lbs. | Yamaha KT100 | 3-Hole Can |
| The Junior version of the Senior Sportsman class (yes we know this is confusing, as the Junior Sportsman class is Briggs, blame WKA).
This class is technically identical to the Senior Sportsman karts, it differs only in the minimum weight, making it an ideal class
for juniors looking to transition either to Senior Sportsman or Yamaha Pipe. Speeds are similar to the Junior Unrestricted class. |
| Stock Light |
| Briggs Light (WKA) |
|
| 15+ | 325lbs. | Briggs | Stock |
| The "lightest" of the senior Briggs classes. These are relatively unmodified Briggs motors run without any form of restriction with standard
carb and muffler. The Stock Light/Medium/Heavy/Super-Heavy classes are all the same in every respect except the minimum weights required. |
| Stock Medium |
| Briggs Medium (WKA) |
|
| 15+ | --- | Briggs | Stock |
| The medium-weight version of the senior Briggs class. |
| Stock Heavy |
| Briggs Heavy (WKA) |
|
| 15+ | 365lbs. | Briggs | Stock |
| The heavy-weight version of the senior Briggs class. |
| Stock Super-Heavy |
Briggs Super-Heavy (WKA) Briggs Super-Heavy Driver |
|
| 15+ | 400lbs. (Driver: 200lbs.) | Briggs | Stock |
| The super-heavy-weight version of the senior briggs class. In addition the driver must weigh at least 200lbs. The driver restriction is to
prevent light guys adding lots of weight, which at some point is an advantage because added weight can be positioned anywhere in the kart. |
| Senior Sportsman |
Yamaha Can Senior Can |
|
| 15+ | 360lbs. | Yamaha KT100 | 3-Hole Can |
| This is the senior version of the afformentioned Junior Yamaha class. At Oswego we strictly run the
3-hole can exhaust restrictor in the Senior Sportsman class. Note that this is directly contrary
to the official WKA rules, which no longer allow the 3-hole can, and instead utilize a 4-hole version. It
should be noted that the 3-hole can was run for so many years before WKA moved to a new design that there
are still vast quantities of these cans around in private possesion. If the supply of them ever dries up
or community attitudes shift we may move to a 4-hole can at some point. |
|
| 15+ | 360lbs. | Yamaha KT100 | Pipe |
| This class uses exactly the same engine (The Yamaha KT100) as Senior Sportsman, only a pipe of
standard design is used for exhaust restriction. The pipe is a much much more efficient design and so this
class achieves much higher speeds than the can class does. |
| 100cc Controlled |
| Controlled |
|
| 15+ | 325-365lbs. | Variable | Variable |
This class actually allows several different types of engine
to be used, which are balanced by different minimum weights. We will try to obtain a more detailed
description of the different engine types at some point. The following setups are allowed:
Yamaha - 325lbs.
Piston-Port - 340lbs.
Rotary-Reed - 355lbs.
New Rotary-Reed - 365lbs.
|
|
| 15+ | Variable | Variable | Variable |
| This is another grouping of several different engines into one class. A description of the regulations for
TAG can be found over at the TAG USA website.
Since the only type of engine yet used at Oswego is the Rotax Max engine, this class is also commonly referred to as Rotax.
Minimum weight for the Rotax motor is 325lbs. |
